Wide Sargasso Sea (Essential Penguin)

Wide Sargasso Sea - Jean Rhys Although I liked the descriptions of the Caribbean and felt the book was well written I didn’t enjoy reading it.
My opinion may have been coloured by the fact that I got the impression the author had an agenda and was trying to make Mr Rochester the villain of the piece blaming him for Bertha’s descent into madness.
However what she actually wrote seemed to suggest it was a genetic condition exacerbated by a bad marriage and the fact that Bertha turned to drink as the solution to her problems.
